1. WHAT IS SYNTAX?

In linguistics, syntax refers to the rules that govern the ways in which wordscombine to form phrases, clauses, and sentences. It's the concept that enables people to know things like adjectives generally come before the nouns they describe (green chair), how to start a question with a question word (What is that?), that subjects often come before verbs in non-question sentences (She jogged.), prepositional phrases start with prepositions (to the store), helping verbs come before main verbs (can go, will do), and so on.

2.THE USING OF SYNTAX

Syntax is the name given to the rules of structuring of the parts of speech to create clauses, phrases and sentences to create meaning.
• Using statements: to establish facts, express feelings and appreciate others.
• Using questions to acquire information and cause thinking.
• Using commands: to gain compliance.
• Using exclamations: to grab attention and evoke emotion.
• Clauses: The basic structure used in sentences.
o Clause arrangement: Subtle changes of arrangement and meaning.
• Phrases: Even smaller parts of sentences.

Example :

That big box is very heavy

Box = Word
That big box = Phrases
That big box is very heavy = Clauses
